Workshop- PREMIS

The workshop "Preservation Metadata: the Cornerstone of Long-Term Digital Preservation Practices" will be held on April 11-12, 2013 in New York at the Metropolitan New York Library Council.

To preserve digital content for the long term requires the preserving institution to know key pieces of technical and structural information about the data. Preservation metadata is the information you need to know in order to manage, use, and understand your valuable digital assets into the future. This workshop provides a hands-on introduction to the PREMIS Data Dictionary for Preservation Metadata, the key standard in this area, and how it is being implemented world-wide.

Topics will include an introduction to the PREMIS data model, an examination of the Data Dictionary, and its implementation in XML and METS within the context of larger digital library issues. Current trends in PREMIS implementations will be covered, including its use as Linked Data in the Semantic Web. A review of selected implementations will highlight use cases and issues for preservation planners to consider. There will be ample time for open discussion of implementation issues. Participants already using PREMIS are encouraged to contribute by presenting information about their own implementations and issues encountered.
