·         Opportunities to meet and interact with senior management at the National Library of Medicine
·         Experienced preceptors from National Library of Medicine staff
·         Potential to compete for a second year fellowship at a health sciences library in the United States

FREE Online conference - LYRASIS Preservation Town Hall Series

We are excited to announce the LYRASIS Preservation Town Hall Series.  This is a forum to bring together libraries and other cultural heritage organizations to discuss methods for safeguarding and sustaining valuable collections. The LYRASIS Preservation Town Hall Series is hosted by LYRASIS and supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). These meetings provide an opportunity to learn about and share best practices, firsthand experiences, and helpful resources from experts in the community and your colleagues. All sessions will be FREE for participants.

The series will kick off with the Cooperative Community Emergency Response and Recovery Town Hall meeting, which will be held twice - first on October 8 at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA and then again on December 6 at the Georgia Tech Global Learning Center in Atlanta, GA.  The Atlanta session will be a webcast live for participants who are unable to travel.

There are many examples throughout the United States of cultural heritage organizations working with emergency management agencies to create community-wide networks that support joint planning, response and recovery. These partnerships also foster emergency readiness amongst the individual members of the network. Regardless of whether the disaster affects just one building or multiple states, these networks have been successful. Yet, every network is unique. Individual communities have developed their networks in a variety of ways to address political, organizational, and geographic issues. These meetings will focus on how local planning can lead to successful regional disaster response and recovery efforts.

Featured speakers for the October 8 Town Hall at Temple University include:
Lori Foley, Vice President for Emergency Programs, Heritage Preservation
Michele Stricker, Deputy Director, New Jersey State Library
Mary Anne Farrell, Delaware Disaster Assistance Team (DDAT)
Alix Bentrud, Preservation Services Librarian, LYRASIS

Featured speakers for the December 6 Town Hall at Georgia Tech include:
Lori Foley, Vice President for Emergency Programs, Heritage Preservation
Christine Wiseman, Head, Digital Services Unit, Robert W. Woodruff Library of the Atlanta University Center and Heritage Emergency Response Alliance - Atlanta,
Steering Committee
Mona K Vance, Archivist, Columbus-Lowndes Public Library
Alix Bentrud, Preservation Services Librarian, LYRASIS

CFP - Society of Southwest Archivists

Did you miss the SAA conference in New Orleans? Or did you attend and wish you could go back? Well, here's your chance!

The Society of Southwest Archivists & the Southern Archives Conference are holding a joint annual meeting in the Crescent City May 27-31, 2014.

The Program Committee is currently soliciting conference sessions proposals with the deadline of November 27, 2013.

The form for submissions is available here: http://southwestarchivists.org/events?eventId=721949&EventViewMode=EventDetails

This year's conference theme is "Casting a Wide Net," and we are eager for session presentations on a wide range of topics. Some suggested session themes are:

·       Museum archives

·       Oral History collections

·       Film archives/collections

·       Public History programs

·       Archival Educators

·       Records Management

·       Religious archives/collections

·       Small historical societies

·       Appraisers / agents / sellers

·       Intellectual property issues

·       Facilities / buildings / shelving [moving collections; space management]

·       County records

·       Military archives/collections

We welcome traditional conference sessions consisting of 3 presenters + a chair to moderate, as well as more informal panel discussions.

And this year we are hoping to try something new and have a "boot camp" thread throughout the conference. These sessions would be led by one or two presenters and would provide a more in-depth focus on a particular topic. The idea is to provide a "how to" type experience for attendees that includes issues, trends, and tips. Suggested themes for these sessions include:

·       Recruiting & training volunteers

·       Strategic planning

·       Mobile archives

·       Crowd-funding and other trends in development

·       Disaster planning

·       Archives job hunt

·       Exhibition planning

·       Succession planning in archives

·       Marketing & branding

·       Publishing in the archives field

·       Friends groups & advisory boards

We hope that you will consider submitting a session proposal on one of these, or other, topics.
